Obituary

Velma "Lorraine" Williams Huffman

March 27, 1922- May 28, 2019
As I sit at the kitchen table with a pen in my hand trying to find the words to piece together my grandmother's life, all I can think of is the "dash". Attempting to summarize 97 years of life that dash represents between two dates. The dates tell of her first breath and of her last, but the dash is her story...
As a young woman, Lorraine worked as a telephone operator in Carter county while she was acquiring her teaching certificate. She taught in the public school system until 1982. When her teaching career began, she taught kindergarten through 8th grade in a single room school house "down home" (as she would say).
Lorraine was first introduced to her husband, Bill, by a fellow teacher in 1949. They married in August that same year. In 1950, they welcomed their only child William Ray Huffman. "Billy" was their entire world.
After her retirement, Lorraine found enjoyment and spending time with her grandchildren, as well as collecting glassware, stamps, and dolls. She loved shopping at flea markets and enjoyed the treasurers she found. Some of those "treasures" were truly the friends she made.
Through the years, she dedicated herself to others. Not only to the students she taught, or to the friends along the way, but also to the family she loved. She cared for her mother threw her final years as well as her husband and her son.
Velma Lorraine Williams Huffman was a kind daughter, an awnry sister, devoted wife, patient mother, loving granny, and a caring friend.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and she will forever be missed.
She is preceded in death by her parents: Jack and Sophronia Williams. Sisters: Barbara Griffin and Nettie Williamson. Brothers: Jesse Williams and Theodore Williams. Husband: George "Bill" Huffman, and her son William Ray Huffman.
She is survived by her sisters Patsy Dell and Doris Mae Williams. Brother: Burton Williams. Grandchildren: William Wayne Huffman, Christie Ann Lea, and Tricia Renee Huffman Bailey. Great-grandchildren: Chelzie Huffman, Trent Huffman, Bryce Huffman, Paige Lea, Paitlyn Lea, and Bentley Miller-Huffman. And a great great grandson Parker Lee.
