Rex Eugene Friend Sr., 94, passed away at his home in Bois D'Arc, MO on Tuesday, June 8, 2021. He was born on Flag Day, Monday, June 14, 1926 in Springfield, MO to Kittie Hammons and Eugene Friend. Rex would happily tell you that his birth was the reason they flew the flag.

Rex married the love of his life, Pauline McMillin on October 13, 1944. Together they raised three sons and two daughters, Rex Jr., Steven, Gary, Regenia and Terresa. He served in the Army from November 7, 1945 until May 5, 1947 in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. After the war he worked various jobs, many with his brother, Harry (Jack) Friend, in Missouri and Illinois. Rex eventually settled in Bois D'Arc, MO where he worked and retired from the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners as a Correctional Officer in Springfield, MO. He had a passion for Music and taught himself to play the guitar as well as writing many of his own songs and music. Rex enjoyed the outdoors immensely, taking pleasure in gardening and walking the countryside. An avid puzzler, he was often found with a crossword or sudoku book in hand. With a ready smile and quick wit, it was quite difficult to get ahead of him (even if you "just couldn't wait"). Rex was always willing to lend a helping hand, whether with home building, car repair or just lending an ear. He was a mentor, teacher, supporter and a believer. Rex encouraged many to follow their dreams, big or small.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, one sister Helen Drake and one brother Harry Friend.

Rex is survived by his five children Rex Friend Jr. (wife Diana) of Wichita, KS, Steven Friend of Springfield, MO, Gary Friend (wife Brenda) of Marshfield, MO, Regenia Friend of Springfield, MO and Terresa Maples (husband Kenneth) of Bois D'Arc, MO, ten grandchildren and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren.

A visitation will take place from 6-8 PM on his birthday Monday, June 14, 2021 at the Klingner-Cope Family Funeral Home at White Chapel, 5234 W.
