Mrs. Phyllis Barnhouse, 88, passed away Thursday, June 8th in the home of her daughter, where she resided since a stroke in 2015.
She was born in Springfield November 30, 1928 to Clyde and Cona Royal and was a lifelong resident here. As a girl she was a member of Alpha Tau Phi sorority and later Beta Sigma Phi. She served two years as President of Study PTA in the 1960''s, in 1978 was Worthy Matron of Springfield Crescent Chapter #21 of Eastern Star and was a member of The First Baptist Church of Battlefield.
Phyllis taught piano for 15 years and felt her work with music and children was the most satisfying thing she ever did. Her many piano students will remember her as Mrs. Deatherage. She volunteered for many civil organizations and after retiring from Boatman''s Bank she enjoyed traveling in many states and Europe.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; a son Randy Deatherage; husband, Guy Barnhouse; brother and his wife, Bob and Betty Royal.
She will be greatly missed by her surviving family, daughter, Suzanne Nims and her partner Rick Smith; niece Gloria Thompson and her husband Tom; great nephew, Rob Thompson; grandson, Randy Sorrells; great grand daughter, Ashlyn Sorrells; step grandson, Rob Nims and his fianc Christina Fanatia; and step great grand daughters, Bella and Baylie Nims.
In keeping with Phyllis'' wishes there will be a family graveside service. Memorial contributions may be made to her favorite charity, CARE Animal Shelter.
