Mary A. Spellman Haymes
Mary A. Spellman Haymes died peacefully on October 2, 2016, just 4 weeks shy of her 96th birthday. Mary was born north of Springfield, the youngest daughter of Katie Jane and Wilber Spellman, just 15 minutes after the birth of her twin sister, Murl. She was raised in Springfield,
attending Ed V Williams, Reed and Springfield High School. Mary went on to graduate from Southwest Missouri State Teachers College (MSU) where she majored in elementary education and was a proud member of the Bruin Boosters Drum Corps. She taught in Republic and Mountain Grove before her marriage to Charles William Haymes upon his return from WWII. To this marriage, three children were born: Susan (Phil) Moran, Stephen (Jackie) Haymes, and Katy (Russ Gillihan) Fowler. Mary is survived by her children and 6 grandchildren, Seth Moran, Ben (Amy) Moran, Micah (Sarah) Moran, Jess (Jennifer) Moran, Amy Donnelly and Rian (Broc) Hansing and 10 great grandchildren (Preston, Emma, Brendan, Lucy, Lydia, Dylan, Cale, Rowan, Nora and Elle). She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and 7 siblings.
Mary was devoted to her family where she was loved by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was known as a kind, loving, gentle woman by her family, friends and by those whose lives she touched in her work with children in church and community. She was a member of Campbell United Methodist Church. The family would like to thank the staff of Magnolia Square for the friendship, love and dignity they provided her in her final years. In lieu of flowers, Mary requested that memorial contributions be made to Campbell United Methodist Church.
A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, October 7, 2016, at 10 am (visitation preceding at 9 am) at Klingner-Cope Family Funeral Home at White Chapel, 5234 W State Hwy EE (Division) burial to follow at White Chapel Cemetery.
