Obituary

Mrs. Martha Eryleene Groner, age 87, of Battlefield, Missouri passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at her home.

Martha Eryleene Madden was born on Friday, July 23, 1937 to Edward Charles Madden and Edna Alice Sloan-Madden in Springfield, Missouri. She was the middle of three daughters. Her parents; older sister Elaine Maynard; husband Wayne; and son Philip preceded her in death. She married Wayne Edward Groner on November 26, 1965 in the home of her parents in Springfield, Missouri. They were married 56 years. She is survived by their daughter Heidi Bullington, her husband Lonnie and their children Sarah and Alex; daughter-in-law Allyson Groner and her children Parker and Pierce; her sister Nancy Morris and her husband Gary; her brother-in-law Frank and their children, Linda Lacy, Bobbi Aton, Karen Campbell, Jeff Maynard, Jim Maynard and their families; her brother-in-law Gene Groner and his wife Kathleen and their children; Paul, Alisha, and Chad Groner, Rachelle Williams, Heather Batzli and their families. She is survived by her cousin Deanna "DeeDee" Horst whom she considered her other sister, and cousins, Nicki Listerman and Joanne Sloan.

Eryleene grew up in a Christian home. She had a strong faith in God all her life. She was the granddaughter of the Reverend E. T. Sloan, a Baptist minister who pastored at several churches in and around Springfield. Eryleene was baptized or "DUNKED" twice. First in East Avenue Baptist church as a young child and again in the RLDS church on National Avenue, later named Community of Christ.

Eryleene attended public schools here, graduating from Central High School in 1955. She worked for Southwestern Bell for ten years until her children were born. She was a volunteer for hospices for 19 years. Wayne and Eryleene lived in Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska. In 1995 they moved one last time back to her beloved Ozarks to be near family. In 2004 she and Wayne both became involved with Community of Hospice for Missouri. She said she felt she had a special calling to give comfort to the terminally ill since she had survived cancer for 32 years until now.

Her family and friends would admit she will be remembered for her hilarious birthday and anniversary cards. She enjoyed creating them and everyone looked forward to receiving them. She had quite the sense of humor. Though sweet and innocent in appearance, she had a way of showing another side of herself through those cards. She was loved dearly and will be deeply missed.
