Obituary

Martha Eileen Treat (Kleier) West was born to Bessie Laura (Snyder) and Franklin Treat on September 8, 1921 in Marionville, MO. Martha was the oldest of seven siblings, Edna (Lawson), Laura (Lawson), Inez (Herd), Atlee Treat, Lula (Heckler), and Helen (West) Shelton.

After her mother's passing in 1933, Martha began raising her siblings alongside her father. At the age of twelve years, she became known as "Mom" to the other children. She worked hard on the farm - gardening, cooking all the meals, doing the laundry and mending, and tending the field with her father. Martha continued to raise the children until her marriage to Novil Mark Kleier in Seymour, MO. They had two daughters, Dorthy I. (Kleier) Nellans and Ruby Nell Kleier.

Novil was enlisted in the Army during WWII and served until he was killed on the beaches of Normandy. He is buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery in Saint-Avold, Moselle, France, along with thousands of others who served and gave their lives for our country.

She later married Ralph E. West and they had a son, Ralph E. West Jr.

Martha continued her life as a mother to her children as well as her siblings. She was a staff cook in nursing homes, restaurants, and a Seventh Day Adventist school. She was an incredibly hard worker who took pride in her large gardens and canning. Her passion for sewing and quilting is still evident in the homes of her family, as she gifted her beautiful quilts to those she loved. All the way into her late 90s, Martha showed her work ethic and made delicious pies, even during her short stay in a nursing home.

In January of 2020, Martha began living with her daughter Dorthy and son-in-law Robert (Bob) at their home in Argos, IN, due to aging and health concerns. Martha passed away peacefully in their home on January 23rd, 2023 at 8:00 AM, with her loving daughter by her side.

She is preceded in death by her parents Bessie and Franklin, siblings Edna, Inez, Atlee, and Lula, husband Novil Mark Kleier, husband Ralph E. West, daughter Ruby, son Ralph Jr., and son-in-law Robert Nellans.

She is survived by sisters Laura and Helen, daughter Dorthy, daughter-in-law Ilonna (Lewis) West, grandchildren Wesley S. and Jennie (Stone) Nellans, Kirk P. and Kathy (Bockman) Nellans, Andrea (West) Wyrick, Alicia (West) and Steve Sloan, and Ronnie and Melissa (Robinson) West. Her great-grandchildren are Emma (Nellans) and Nicholas Joyner, Isaac Nellans, Grace Nellans, Josiah Nellans, Laci Nellans, Naomi Sloan, and Eliza Sloan. Her great-great-grandchild is Hope C. Joyner.

Martha was a sister, a mother, an aunt, a wife, a grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, as well as the Masonic Eastern Star in Springfield, MO. She won many hearts over her years, and loved everyone deeply. She was witty, loving, caring, and hard working. She was determined to give her best to everyone, and she put a smile on everyone's faces.

Martha was loved dearly by her families in Missouri, Indiana, New Jersey, California, and Arkansas.

Funeral services will be held by Pastor Jerry Duvall of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in White Chapel, Springfield, MO. She will be laid to rest in the White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Springfield.
