John Lauf Jr, 88, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away on April 30, 2023, unexpectedly. He was surrounded by his family when he passed. John was born on March 17, 1935 to John Lauf and Margaret Lauf in Belleville, Illinois.

John joined the Army in 1953 and retired 20 years and 16 days later in 1973. In 1957, John met the love of his life, Shirley, in Salem, Missouri. They later adopted their daughter, Sherrie. John owned and operated his own business and retired in 2012 after 31 years. He enjoyed fishing, boating, and spending time with family and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret Lauf, and his brother Leroy.

John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Shirley, his daughter Sherrie Gates (Eric), granddaughter Rachael Day (Jason), grandson D.J. Heglund (Gillian), great grandchildren Madison, Drake, Logan, Roxy and great-great-grandson, Kannon. He was known as Papa to all his grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Don and sister, Darlene as well of several brothers-in laws and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

John was a happy, fun-spirited soul who was loved by so many people. He loved his family, friends and his dog, Lizzy. He made an impact on so many lives. His love, kindness and that smile will forever be missed.

John and his wife, Shirley, attended James River Assembly of God for several years.

John, Daddy, Papa: everyone you left in this world hurts that you are gone, but we are happy that you are in Heaven and no longer in pain. We will always love and miss you until we meet again.

The funeral services will be held 12:30 p. m. Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at Klinger-Cope Family Funeral Home at Rivermonte, at 4500 S. Lone Pine Ave, Springfield, Missouri 65804. The visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p. m. in the funeral home. U.S. Army Staff Sergeant John Lauf Jr. will be laid to rest at 1:00 p. m. at Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield with full Military honors.
