Jerry Douglas Byers, 85, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away Saturday, November 16, 2024, at Cox Health Medical Center South, Springfield, Missouri.
Jerry was born on March 16, 1939, in West Plains, Missouri, the son of Opal Brower-Byers and W.N. "Bill" Byers. He was united in marriage to Judith Jean Ruyle in 1961. She survives.
He is survived by two sons, Steve (Betsy) of Jefferson City and Greg of Kansas City; grandchildren, Hayley (Mitchell) Solano, Josh Byers, Lindsey Byers, Alexandra (Alan) Gillette, and Marcus (Chapin) Milner; three great-grandchildren, Graham and Hayes Solano and Brooks Milner. Also surviving are his nephew Robert (Vicky) Hill and niece Sharon (Paul) Curtis, and several great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Jane Erwin and Jean Hill.
Jerry graduated from Central High School in Springfield and soon afterwards joined the United States Army. Upon discharge he returned to Springfield and married Judy. They recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. Jerry was employed by Insurance Service Offices where he was a fire inspector and a member of Second Baptist Church. In his spare time Jerry enjoyed hunting, fishing, and coaching his sons' sports teams. He also refereed high school basketball and umpired softball for over 20 years. Jerry was also a member of the 57 Chevy Car Club and traveled to a number of car shows around the country with Judy and other members of the club.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2024 at Klinger-Cope Family Funeral Home at White Chapel at 11:00am. The funeral service will begin at 12:00pm with burial following the service at White Chapel Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to The Greater Missouri Alzheimer's Association, 901 E St. Louis St, Suite 702, Springfield, MO 65806.
