Obituary

Jeffrey Lynn Messenger, 75, of Republic, Missouri, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, October 17, 2025 at 10:17 a.m., surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Monday, November 28, 1949 in Scott City, Kansas to Harry Vernil Messenger and Vada Lamoine Messenger (Robinson).

Jeff was a proud veteran and served four years in the United States Navy, achieving the rank of Aviation Electronics Technician Petty Officer Third Class, an enlisted rank responsible for maintaining aircraft electronic systems like radar, radio, and navigation equipment. He also served for two years at the naval base in Corpus Christi, Texas as an electronic mechanic on aircrafts.

Following his service, Jeff embraced a life of entrepreneurship, using his sharp mind, strong work ethic and leadership skills to build a successful career. He also served his community with distinction as a member of the Missouri House of Representatives, where his diplomacy and integrity earned him respect across all walks of life.

On October 5, 1968, Jeff married Wanda Fay Messenger (Kelsay), his devoted wife of 57 years. Together they raised two sons, Jeffrey Lynn Messenger II (wife Emily Louise Messenger) and Eric Dee Messenger. Jeff was a proud and loving grandfather to Lauren James, Danielle and Hudson Messenger. His greatest joy was simply being with his family and taking cruises to warm climates like the Caribbean, whether traveling, playing card games, or sharing everyday moments that became treasured memories.

Jeff was known for his deep wisdom, kindness and the steady presence he offered to all who knew him. His Christian faith guided his life and was reflected in his unwavering care for others. To know Jeff was to know a man who stood for what was right and led with humility, grace and strength.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Steven Messenger.

Jeff is survived by his wife, his two children, three grandchildren and three sisters Terry Erwin, Linda Richardson and Cheryl Brown.

A heartfelt letter from family members Rob and Carla Mayfield captures his legacy:

Dear Jeff,
You have asked me on more than one occasion, "Do you know who I am?" To which I promptly rolled my eyes. But I do know who you are.
You are a man who has stood for what is right and have always been kind as you did so, even when people haven't been kind to you.
You are the one who is always available to help when we don't know what to do, and you are always gracious and patient as you guide others.
You are a man who enjoys success and celebrates with others.
You are the one who finds joy in just being together and makes that time fun.
You have always been ready to go, and you always help create happy memories.
So, yes, I know who you are – a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, advisor, legislator, dependable great man, and so much more than I can put on paper.
You have been a great blessing and treasure to us who know you.

— Rob and Carla Mayfield
