Fred Matteson, 92, of Springfield, MO passed away on Sunday, October 3, 2021. He was born on Friday, August 16, 1929 in Pedelo (Rogersville), MO to Bert H. Matteson and Bertha A. Swearengin.
Fred served in the U.S. Army as a Tank Commander with the 9th Infantry Regiment during Korea. During that time he achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class and was awarded a bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Fred worked on the Frisco and Burlington Northern Railroad for 43 years and was a member of the Elks Lodge #409 and the VFW. He was a generous, extremely witty, soft-hearted man who knew how to live – he loved nice clothes, cars, cognac and cigars.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Ed Matteson and two half brothers Arnold and Jack Acton.
He is survived by his daughter Sara Aton (husband Chris Broussard) of Ann Arbor, MI, one half sister Florence Bowers of Springfield, MO, three nieces Judy Chastain (husband Gerald) of Willard, MO Antonia Welch and Connie Avis, his cousin Kathy Bergant (husband Robert) of New Berlin, WI and one grandson Ogden Broussard of Ann Arbor, MI.
Fred will lie in state from 8:30 - 1:30 P.M. on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at the Klingner-Cope Family Funeral Home at Rivermonte, 4500 S. Lone Pine Ave., Springfield, MO 65804 with full military honors to follow at 2 PM at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to St. Jude's.
