IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Bonnie Mae
Brunson Cundiff Gray
April 23, 1937 – September 5, 2024
Surrounded by her family, Bonnie Gray of Springfield, Missouri passed away on September 5, 2024, at the age of 87. She was born to Charles Henry and Laura Esther Mae Brunson in Harvey, IL on April 23, 1937. A woman of faith, Bonnie devoted her life to nurturing her family and serving her Lord as a minister's wife and church organist/pianist. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Perry Brunson, husbands Rev. William Edgar "Bill" Cundiff and Rev. Charles Edgar "Ed" Gray, her son Charles Cundiff, stepdaughter Janice Hodges, and great-grandsons Harrison and Theodore Carroll.
She is survived by daughters Catherine (Mark) Bear, Charissa (Nick) Carroll, Cara Cundiff (David Enyart), and daughter-in-law Sue Cundiff.
One of her greatest joys in life was being grandmother/step-grandmother to Laura (Michael) Hoffmann, Brian Bear, Daniel Cundiff, Michael (Rochelle) Carroll, Shannon (Bryan) Otradovec, Adam (Hannah) Carroll, Jaylen Jennings (Nicholas Murphy), Brian (Betsi) Hodges, and Ashley (Steve) Lake.
Later in life, she relished the role of being great-grandmother/step great-grandmother to Christian, Samantha, Mateo, and Belen Robbins, Grayson, Isabella, and Hayley Bear, Isaac and Charlotte Carroll, Noah and Landon Otradovec, Carolyne and Tennis Carroll, Clara Hodges, and Lillian and Matthew Lake.
Bonnie graduated from Springfield Central High School in 1955 and earned her BA in Music Education from Southwest Missouri State in 1959. She married Bill Cundiff in 1956 and settled into life as the wife of a Methodist minister. She was by his side as he founded Wesley Methodist Church in 1964. Bill passed away in 1972 leaving her to raise her four young children as a single mother. To support her family, she worked serving lunch to elementary students in the Springfield Public Schools for over twenty years.
She married Ed Gray in 1992 and the two of them enjoyed many years watching their grandchildren participate in various sports and activities. She supported Ed's ministry until his death in 2008 by playing the organ and piano for the churches where he served. She continued to play at Elwood Methodist Church, (Ed's final pastorate), until well into her eighties.
Bonnie spent her final days being cared for by the staff at Cox Medical Center, the Manor at Elfindale, and CoxHealth at Home Hospice. Her entire family wishes to acknowledge our gratitude for their kindness and loving care of our mother as well as for their support of us during this difficult time.
Despite facing many tragedies and challenges in this life, Bonnie's faith in Christ never wavered. So many of her friends have shared with us how they were inspired by her resilience and loved her keen wit and quick humor. She will be missed, but we rejoice knowing that she is in the arms of her Lord.
