IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Betty
Putnam
September 18, 1924 – June 25, 2023
Elizabeth "Betty" Putnam passed away peacefully at home with her family in West Hills, a suburb of Los Angeles, CA, on Sunday, June 25, 2023. She was 98 years old.
Born to parents Arthur and Edith (Francis) Farrar on September 18, 1924 in Lutesville, Bollinger County, Missouri, she spent her entire childhood in Missouri until the 1940's when she came with her parents to Los Angeles for employment.
Betty was a "Rosie the Riveter" during WW2, working at Douglas Aircraft in El Segundo, CA. A tiny thing, she was able to crawl inside the fuel tank and wings of the SBD Dauntless - "The Savior of the Pacific". She later went to nursing school and worked as a nurse in Lancaster.
She married the love of her life, Charles J. Putnam in 1948. Chuck worked as a deputy sheriff in Lancaster and Malibu and passed away in 1997. They raised their 3 children in Lancaster, CA, eventually moving to the west San Fernando Valley in 1968. Upon retirement, Chuck & Betty moved back to her home state of Missouri and settled in beautiful Springfield. They enjoyed traveling the world and spent time traveling around the U.S. visiting family.
Betty enjoyed opera, the symphony, sewing, knitting, making jewelry and her cats but she especially loved her family. When her health declined, she moved back to California to live with her devoted son Bob and daughter-in-law Tricia who both lovingly cared for her until her death.
Survived by 2 sons Michael Putnam of Granada Hills and Robert Putnam & his wife Tricia of West Hills, CA, 7 grandchildren, Brandy, who she raised, Jamie, Jennifer, Christina, Zachary, Caitlin & Molly, 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by a beloved daughter Edith in 1966.
She will be dearly missed by her family.
