Andrew "Andy" P. Schmitt 61 of Springfield passed away peacefully at home after a short illness on Friday morning October 28, 2011. Andy was born February 17, 1950 in Springfield to Andrew Hampton and Betty Peters Poole. He was raised by Bill and Mary Schmitt. Andy married Nancy Jean Garoutte on December 9, 2006.
Andy worked for City Utilities for 32 ½ years and also owned Andy''s Mower Repair. He was a member of the SW MO Steam Engine Association. Andy''s hobbies included gardening, fishing, and shooting pool. He also enjoyed casino hopping, traveling but most of all, spending time with family and friends.
Andy was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Nancy Kay Schmitt; son Andrew Charles Poole; a sister, Linda and brothers, Bill and Smitty.
He is survived by his wife Nancy Jean Schmitt; daughter, Shelley Messina and husband, Joe and granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Abby; a son, Jason Schmitt and wife Shelly, and grandson, Justin; sisters, Helen Collier, Barbara Johnston, Carolyn Norton and Darlene Woodmansee and numerous other family and friends.
A visitation is scheduled for Monday, October 31, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Klingner-Cope Family Funeral Home, 1635 N. Benton, Springfield. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at 2 p.m. in Hazelwood Cemetery, 1642 E. Seminole, Springfield.
Family have requested donations be made in Andy''s name to either the American Cancer Society, 3322 S. Campbell, Springfield, MO 65807 or the SW MO Humane Society, 3161 W. Norton Road, Springfield, MO 65803.
Andy will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
