Alice "Lucille" Hammond, 93, passed peacefully into her eternal home on January 13, 2014, with her daughters at her side.
Lucille was born on January 29, 1920, in Springfield to Walter J. and Grace W. White.
She graduated from Senior High School in 1939. Lucille displayed a giftedness in art throughout her school years and pursued her art education after graduation enrolling in many classes and workshops.
She joined other Springfield artists as early as 1949 in the City Hall basement to attend classes in oil painting techniques.
She was honored in 1960 by a "One Man Show" exhibit at the Springfield Art Museum. Lucille continued to receive many awards throughout her career, and her work is displayed in many homes and businesses throughout the area and beyond.
In 1970, Lucille assisted her nephew, Jerry Sanders and twin-sister Louise Prater, in opening The National Art Shop. For several years, she enjoyed encouraging and assisting both professional artists and students. She was a member of the Studio 55 Art Group and was blessed with many friendships in the Springfield art community.
Lucille was a member of Mount Carmel Methodist Church. She was proceeded in death by her husband, John Hammond, three sisters, Mildred Clarke Keeling, Louise Prater and Mary Maggi; and one step-brother, Raymond Day.
She is survived by two daughters, Sharon Hammond, Marta Anderson and husband Jim; two granddaughters, Brooke Mathews and husband, Dan; Jenny Sledge and husband, Phillip; two great-granddaughters, Gabrielle and Grace Anne Mathews; one great-grandson, John Sledge; as well as many adoring nieces, nephews and friends.
Her generosity of spirit and warmth will be greatly missed, but her legacy of beautiful art remains.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 16th from 6-8 p.m. at Klingner-Cope Midtown at 1635 North Benton. Graveside services on Friday, January 17th at 10 a.m. at Eastlawn Cemetery, 2244 E Pythian, Springfield, MO
